Lambda Literary Awards 2007

vom Krimiblogger

Gay Men’s Mystery

mardi_gras_mambo_lambda.jpgGreg Herren: Mardi Gras Mambo
(Verlag: Kensington)

Verlagstext:
In Bourbon Street Blues and Jackson Square Jazz, Greg Herren introduced the wickedly naughty—and irrepressible—Scotty Bradley, who’s never met a drink he didn’t want, a decadence he could resist, or a hunky trick he won’t treat to a little bit of himself. Now, in Mardi Gras Mambo, Scotty’s back on the crowded, party-happy streets of New Orleans, getting ready for a Carnival he’ll never forget—if he lives through it…

It’s Carnival time in New Orleans, and Scotty Bradley, ex go-go boy turned private eye, is looking forward to relaxing with his boyfriends, Frank and Colin, and partying it up right. But nothing ever seems to work out the way Scotty wants it. Not only is it cold and rainy, ruining his elaborate costume plans, but former FBI agent Frank has “issues” with dropping a hit (or two, or four) of Ecstasy. Hello! Ecstasy at Mardi Gras is practically guaranteed in the Gay Bill of Rights! Fortunately, Frank gets over himself, the weather clears up, Scotty’s dealer, Misha, delivers the goods, and the boys are off to the races. And that’s when the real fun begins. After a night of partying, they come home to find the cops waiting for them. Misha has apparently been murdered and guess who was the last person to see him alive? Turns out his wheeling and dealing had gotten him in trouble with a lot of people—including the Russian mob. And those guys don’t play around.

Suddenly, Scotty’s missing not just one but two boyfriends. And as the streets of Nola come alive in a hot human frenzy of sequins, music, dancing, and the sweat of thousands of revelers ready to throw caution and clothing to the wind, Scotty is in a desperate race to save the men he sometimes loves and keep Fat Tuesday from being the last day any of them ever see…

the_back_passage_lambda.jpgJames Lear: The Back Passage (Verlag: Cleis Press)
Verlagstext:
A seaside village, an English country house, a family of wealthy eccentrics and their equally peculiar servants, a determined detective—all the ingredients are here for a cozy Agatha Christie–style whodunit.

But wait—Edward „Mitch“ Mitchell is no Hercule Poirot, and The Back Passage is no Murder of Roger Ackroyd. Mitch is a handsome, insatiable 22-year-old hunk who never lets a clue stand in the way of a steamy encounter, whether it’s with the local constabulary, the house secretary, or his school chum and fellow athlete Boy Morgan, who becomes his Watson when they’re not busy boffing each other. When Reg Walworth is found dead in a cabinet, Sir James Eagle has his servant Meeks immediately arrested as the killer. But Mitch’s observant eye pegs more plausible possibilities: polysexual chauffeur Hibbert, queenly pervert Leonard Eagle, missing scion Rex, sadistic copper Kennington, even Sir James Eagle himself.

Blackmail, police corruption, a dizzying network of spyholes and secret passages, watersports, and a nonstop queer orgy backstairs and everyplace else mark this hilariously hard-core mystery by a major new talent.

the_art_of_detection_lambda.jpgLaurie R. King: The Art of Detection (Verlag: Bantam Dell)
Verlagstext:
In this thrilling new crime novel that ingeniously bridges Laurie R. King’s Edgar and Creasey Awards—winning Kate Martinelli series and her bestselling series starring Mary Russell, San Francisco homicide detective Kate Martinelli crosses paths with Sherlock Holmes–in a spellbinding dual mystery that could come only from the “intelligent, witty, and complex” mind of New York Times bestselling author Laurie R. King….

Kate Martinelli has seen her share of peculiar things as a San Francisco cop, but never anything quite like this: an ornate Victorian sitting room straight out of a Sherlock Holmes story–complete with violin, tobacco-filled Persian slipper, and gunshots in the wallpaper that spell out the initials of the late queen.

Philip Gilbert was a true Holmes fanatic, from his antiquated décor to his vintage wardrobe. And no mere fan of fiction’s great detective, but a leading expert with a collection of priceless memorabilia–a collection some would kill for.

And perhaps someone did: In his collection is a century-old manuscript purportedly written by Holmes himself–a manuscript that eerily echoes details of Gilbert’s own murder.

Now, with the help of her partner, Al Hawkin, Kate must follow the convoluted trail of a killer–one who may have trained at the feet of the greatest mind of all times.

But titillation rapidly turns to united outrage when word gets out that Maureen has been attacked by an unidentified man after leaving a local bar.

Maureen’s attorney retains Alex to investigate, but far from clearing up the mystery, Alex seems to fall ever deeper into it.
